Another 3.5%, at least, carry a specific type of genetic mutation that affects the immune response. The findings are part of the research conducted by \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.covidhge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#2b92be\" class=\"has-inline-color\">COVID Human Genetic Effort<\/span><\/a>\u201d, an ongoing international project that covers more than 50 genetic sequencing centers and hundreds of hospitals worldwide. In Brazil, the research is led by the scientist of the Pel\u00e9 Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe Research Institute, Carolina Prando, together with the researcher from the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP), Antonio Condino Neto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In both situations found by the researchers, the result is basically the same: patients lose type I interferon, a group of 17 proteins crucial for the protection of the human body against viral infections. The control group included samples from more than 530 people with asymptomatic or benign infection. Initially, the researchers looked for differences between the two groups, related to 13 genes known to be critical for the body\u2019s defense against the flu virus. These genes govern type I interferons. \u201cA significant number of people with the severe form of COVID-19 carried rare variants in these 13 genes, and more than 3% of them lacked a functional gene,\u201d notes the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese findings provide compelling evidence that interruption of type I interferon is often the cause of death-threatening COVID-19,\u201d says Jean-Laurent Casanova, head of the St. Giles Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases at the Rockefeller University, researcher at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and leader of \u201cCOVID Human Genetic Effort\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Carolina, the great benefit of this discovery is that patients with these characteristics can be treated with medications that are already on the market today, reducing the mortality rates due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-950\" width=\"338\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newscovid19\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/DSC_7600-1-1568x1045.jpg 1568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Autoimmune condition<\/strong><br>The study also evaluated 987 COVID-19 patients at risk of death and found that more than 10% had autoantibodies against interferons at the beginning of the infection. Most of them, 95%, were men. \u201cThis discovery impacts, for example, treatments with human convalescent plasma. If the donor has autoantibodies, the blood plasma cannot be used to treat another infected patient, at the risk of aggravating the health condition,\u201d highlights the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese findings strongly indicate that these autoantibodies are, in fact, the reason why some people get very sick, and not the consequence of infection,\u201d says Casanova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brazilian participation<\/strong><br>Brazil has two genetic sequencing centers participating in the \u201cCOVID Human Genetic Effort\u201d: one located in the Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe Complex (Curitiba\/PR) and one located at USP (S\u00e3o Paulo\/SP). From these centers, partnerships were established with 20 other universities and hospitals in the country for the collection of epidemiological data, exome sequencing and functional studies. The results published in<em> Science<\/em> magazine refer to samples collected in Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
