Although the incidence of COVID-19 in children is lower, it has presented a serious complication that has a high mortality rate: Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (SIM-P). Aware of the seriousness of this syndrome and of its role as a reference, Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe Hospital alerts the whole society to the signs and symptoms of this condition. More than 300 cases have been reported worldwide. At Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe, five children were diagnosed with the syndrome and, unfortunately, three of them died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis syndrome is extremely lethal, as it affects several systems of our body, with respiratory, cardiac, neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, hematological manifestations, hypotension, cardiogenic shock and even skin problems,\u201d explains the infectious doctor of Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe, Victor Hor\u00e1cio de Souza Costa Junior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctor says that the two patients who survived at the Hospital fought a real battle for life. \u201cAlisson, for example, who has myelomeningocele, had four cardiac arrests, had to undergo hemodialysis and two neurological surgeries. He was in a very serious condition, kept in the ICU for 41 days, 12 of which were put into mechanical ventilation. Thanks to the multidisciplinary service we were able to offer at Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe, he won this battle,\u201d he reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, not all children achieved the same clinical outcome as Alisson. One of the patients who died, for example, was 13 years old, with no comorbidity \u2013 she was a healthy child \u2013 and had a mild case of COVID-19 a few days before being admitted to the Hospital. She arrived at the Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe with severe abdominal pain and a condition similar to that of appendicitis. But it very quickly evolved with other complications and she didn\u2019t resist. The other two patients who died had, respectively, associated neurological and oncological disease, that contributed to the aggravation of the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signs to be aware of \u2013 main symptoms<\/strong>
The doctor advises parents to be on the lookout for any symptoms that the child experiences days after the coronavirus infection (SARS-CoV-2). \u201cEven if the COVID-19 condition was mild, in the weeks following the infection it is necessary to be alert and seek medical attention immediately if the child has any of the warning signs. Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe has adopted a series of measures to safely care for all its patients; that is, parents don\u2019t need to be afraid to come to the Hospital. Staying at home and delaying diagnosis can be more dangerous,\u201d he points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main warning signs are:
– conjunctivitis;
– skin lesion;
– inflammation of the hands, feet or mouth;
– abdominal pain;
– diarrhea;
– vomiting;
– low pressure; and
– high and persistent fever, for more than three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
