With 47 specialized services, Pequeno Príncipe combines excellence and innovation to transform the lives of thousands of children
The anniversaries of the services highlight how the evolution of the specialties shapes the identity of the Hospital and its commitment to childhood
For 106 years, the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital has transformed healthcare for children and adolescents into a story of excellence, humanity, and commitment to life. Recognized by Newsweek magazine as the best exclusively pediatric hospital in Latin America and one of the best in the world, the Hospital brings together 47 specialties and combines tradition and innovation — the result of the continuous training of specialized teams, investment in technology, and the integration between care, teaching, and research. This solid structure ensures high-quality care and reaffirms, every day, the institutional mission to protect childhood.

This century-long journey is also built by the stories of thousands of patients who found at the Hospital the specialized care they needed. One of them is Nicolas, 12 years old, who symbolizes the importance of solid and experienced services such as Orthopedics, which in 2025 celebrates 70 years.
Nicolas was born with myelomeningocele, a condition that affects the development of the spinal column and requires continuous follow-up. Throughout his childhood, he underwent several surgeries and faced progressive scoliosis that compromised his mobility and quality of life. In 2024, after more than a year waiting for the ideal clinical moment, he was finally able to undergo spine correction surgery at Pequeno Príncipe. The highly complex procedure lasted about 11 hours and marked a new stage for the boy, who now has better prospects for autonomy and well-being.
Nicolas’s story is just one of many that reveal the impact of specialized services — which, over decades, have shaped the identity of the Hospital. In 2025, some of them celebrate important milestones.
70 years of the Orthopedics Service
The Orthopedics Service was created in 1955. These are seven decades of continuous improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of trauma and complex orthopedic diseases, becoming a national reference, especially in spine surgeries and deformity correction. It is one of the most traditional services of the Hospital and symbolizes the strength of expertise built generation after generation.

30 years of the Pulmonology Service
Pediatric Pulmonology in Pequeno Príncipe reaches 30 years in 2025. Since 1995, it has followed children with respiratory diseases — from asthma to cystic fibrosis — integrating technology, care, and support for families. It offers therapies and guidance that help boys and girls with chronic conditions live with more safety and autonomy.
45 years of the Urology Service
With 45 years of existence, the Urology Service is one of the most complete in the country in treating urogenital malformations and diseases that require continuous follow-up. Its technical development and integration with other specialties ensure precise and humanized care.
40 years of the Nephrology Service
Founded in 1985, the Nephrology Service is nationally recognized and performs all modalities of treatment for chronic kidney failure in childhood, including hemodialysis and kidney transplants. Many of the patients treated come from other regions of Brazil in search of the expertise available at the Hospital.
15 years of the Clinical Research Center
Created in 2010, the Clinical Research Center consolidates the bridge between care and scientific advancement, conducting studies and clinical trials that help develop new pediatric treatments and medications, reinforcing the Hospital’s role also as a research institution.
The trajectory of the Hospital’s services forms the foundation that supports Pequeno Príncipe. These are decades of professionals who have grown with the institution, technologies that have evolved over time, and thousands of children and adolescents who had the opportunity to begin again. Celebrating these milestones is recognizing that excellence is built every day, with science, sensitivity, and commitment to the future.
