They attended the Gala launch dinner, held in early June. The meeting was attended by a small and select group of participants, who were invited to join the initiative\u2019s Philanthropic Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cChildren\u2019s health is facing a continuous and invisible tragedy. Today, in Brazil, of every three babies up to 1-year-old who die, two could be saved with qualified healthcare. Health needs to be on the agenda. We have everything to improve, because the numbers are challenging. Counting on your support is essential for us to improve these indicators,\u201d emphasized the Hospital\u2019s executive director, Ety Cristina Forte Carneiro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Challenges and goal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The goal of this edition of the Gala is to raise US$ 300,000, which will be applied to assistance and research activities carried out in Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe. At the Hospital, 60% of care is provided to patients in the Brazilian Public Health System (known as SUS), which generates a significant deficit for the institution, as for every US$ 20 spent on treating these patients, the SUS passes on only US$ 11.20 to the Hospital. In other words, the average deficit is 43% for each service provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scientific research in Brazil, on the other hand, receives very little incentive and funding. While the average investment in science made by developed countries in the area is around 3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), in Brazil the investment is under 1.2%. Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe invests in this area because it believes that science is the way to find new ways to diagnose and treat complex childhood illnesses, identifying new possibilities to reduce mortality in children and adolescents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These two activities \u2013 healthcare provided by the SUS and investing in research \u2013 has generated an important financial challenge for Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe. In 2023, the institution ended the year with a deficit of more than US$ 14 million.
