Reconstruction of the Oncology, Hematology, and BMT Outpatient Clinic will begin in March

Premises were destroyed in a fire that occurred in October 2023; work is estimated to last four months

Work will begin in March on the reconstruction of the Oncology, Hematology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Outpatient Clinic at Pequeno Príncipe Hospital, which was destroyed by a fire that occurred in October 2023. Hospital teams have been working since November to survey the damage, in the preparation of projects, in the production of technical materials that make up the work’s executive notebook and in quotations for the provision of the service, to define the companies that will be responsible for the work.

The work, in the affected area of 200m2, is expected to last four months. The sector’s entire infrastructure will be redone, which includes the medical gas network, the electrical and logical network, the air conditioning system, the installation of fire prevention devices, the replacement of linings, partitions, flooring and lighting fixtures, the replacement of furniture (stretchers, tables, chairs, armchairs, and cabinets), the acquisition of all damaged equipment and installation of visual communication elements. With this, the space will once again have four offices, 15 chemotherapy chairs, and other care and administrative areas.

In addition to the Oncology, Hematology, and BMT Outpatient Clinic, the work will involve the electrical part of the Orthopedics Service, located next door, which was also affected.

The fire

The fire occurred around 7:30a.m. on October 31, 2023. The fire quickly destroyed the entire space, which included a reception, four offices, a nursing station, two beds for procedures, two isolation rooms, chemotherapy chairs, in addition to various inputs and equipment. At the time of the incident, there were no children or family members in the clinic.

A nurse and a maintenance employee were on site at the time of the explosion. He suffered burns, went through a long recovery process and has shown significant improvements. The nurse wasn’t hurt.

The Hospital Emergency Brigade acted very quickly and efficiently, controlling the flames in less than ten minutes, even before the Fire Department arrived, preventing the fire from spreading to other areas. The assertiveness of the brigade’s actions was recognized and congratulated by the fire brigade command, who visited the institution days after the accident, and also by the Hospital’s senior management, who held special events in recognition and gratitude to the teams involved.

On the same day as the fire, the Hospital installed a temporary outpatient clinic so that no patient would be left without care. Consultations and chemotherapy sessions continue to be held on the sixth floor of the Hospital, until the reconstruction of the outpatient clinic is completed.

Support from society

Immediately after the accident, the Hospital began a campaign to mobilize society in search of support to rebuild the space. “We have a very solid partnership with society, and our request was heard. We received enough support to start rebuilding our space, while we wait for the definitions with the insurance company. With the support of companies and people committed to the right to life of all children, we will rebuild this space, which symbolizes hope for so many children and families fighting childhood cancer. To everyone who is supporting us in this challenge, our deepest gratitude,” declares the executive director of the Hospital, Ety Cristina Forte Carneiro.
