After the fire that destroyed the Oncology, Hematology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Outpatient Clinic, Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe Hospital estimates that investments for the reconstruction and improvements of the area are at least US$ 1 million. The fire affected the entire space, which comprises a reception, four offices, a nursing station, two beds for procedures, two isolation rooms, 16 chemotherapy chairs, and multiple supplies and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institution is awaiting an inspection from the insurance company, which is finalizing the report for reimbursement, and believes that part of the reconstruction can be done with these resources. With this information, it will be possible to predict more accurately how long the restoration will take. \u201cIt is important to explain to the community that part of the damage will be covered by insurance, but we still do not know the conditions related to deadlines and values. However, immediate reconstruction is essential,\u201d says the executive director of Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe, Ety Cristina Forte Carneiro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given this scenario, the philanthropic institution is grateful for all the support. To count on the society, once again, is key to face the new challenge. \u201cWe have a fundraising campaign and will make reports, as always. Any surplus amounts will be used for improvements in the unit and fire prevention,\u201d adds the director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the challenges, the services provided at the outpatient clinic were not interrupted, even on the day of the incident, when they were relocated to temporary spaces on the Hospital\u2019s sixth floor. One of the rooms used by the Education and Culture Sector was adapted to receive patients requiring chemotherapy. Consultations are now taking place in three offices provided by the Psychology Service on the same floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as it is a temporary solution, the reconstruction of the space takes on an urgent nature so that care can be resumed in a complete and perfectly adequate manner, with the comfort that pediatric patients deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire started after an explosion, apparently due to a leak in the oxygen network, on October 31st<\/sup>. A maintenance employee, aged 39 and working at Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe for three years, was injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first information was that he had suffered minor burns. However, after hospitalization and consolidation of the injuries, it was identified that the burn injuries were third-degree. He was discharged from the hospital where he was admitted on the last weekend of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Oncology and Hematology and the BMT services<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

The century-old institution serves around 60% of its patients through the Brazilian Public Health System. In oncology, there are 100 new patients per year. Around 500 children and adolescents receive assistance from the service, which has a multiprofessional support team. The Hospital annually serves 6,000 outpatient services and over 2,500 chemotherapy sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BMT Service, in just over a decade of operation, performed 468 transplants. \u201cWe serve from babies to teenagers and 18-year-olds. The team is very committed and talented, and we all value technical-scientific excellence.
