{"id":1609,"date":"2023-05-24T16:31:39","date_gmt":"2023-05-24T19:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/?p=1609"},"modified":"2023-05-25T10:42:54","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T13:42:54","slug":"study-contributes-to-increasing-understanding-of-the-evolution-of-neuroblastoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/4\/study-contributes-to-increasing-understanding-of-the-evolution-of-neuroblastoma\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Study contributes to increasing understanding of the evolution of neuroblastoma<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Neuroblastoma is a tumor that affects the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for controlling functions that the body performs unconsciously, such as breathing and blood pressure. <strong>This tumor accounts for about 10% of all cases of childhood cancer and mainly affects babies in their first year of life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disease is quite complex due to several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>has a high potential to spread (metastasize);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in many cases, the patient does not respond to existing treatments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>there are many genetic alterations involved in the disease.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>All these characteristics make neuroblastoma cause a high mortality rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_1-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A study carried out by scientists from the Pel\u00e9 Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe Research Institute analyzed four types of <strong>microRNAs<\/strong> from patients with this type of tumor. The miRNAs are small molecules that act in cells, regulating the information contained in genes. <strong>They are involved, for example, in the way genes work, controlling how cancer cells proliferate, how they migrate from one part of the body to another, how they invade other areas or even how they kill other cells.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>What did the study find?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research sought to understand the role of these four types of microRNAs in the prognosis, treatment, and survival of patients with neuroblastoma. For this, samples of tumors that were stored in the Biobank of the Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe Hospital were studied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results obtained showed that these small molecules are associated to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>age of patients at diagnosis;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>treatment phase (pre or post chemotherapy);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gender of the patients;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>patient survival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>How can this help patients?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1587\" width=\"364\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2-1568x1046.jpg 1568w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano7\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/PP_News_Ed4_2023_Materia2_2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Scientist Dr. Luciane Regina Cavalli, who coordinates the study, explains that these results reinforce the importance of microRNAs to understand how the disease develops, as well as their potential to be used as molecular markers for the prognosis and treatment of neuroblastomas. \u201cThe study enables a more precise <strong>stratification of risk groups for the disease.<\/strong> Let us imagine that a patient is considered low or medium risk based on clinical parameters, such as age and disease stage, for example. The genetic study of this patient will identify which miRNAs are present in greater or lesser amounts in their cells. If these markers are found in altered amounts, they may mean a greater chance of clinical complications, such as non-response to treatment.
