Pronon and Pronas are back

Through these programs, companies can allocate part of their Due Income Tax to finance projects focused on cancer care and people with disabilities

The National Program to Support Oncology Care (Pronon, abbreviation in Portuguese) and the National Program to Support Healthcare for People with Disabilities (Pronas/PcD, also in Portuguese) are back. In July, the federal government issued an ordinance from the Brazilian Ministry of Health establishing the deadlines and conditions for the presentation of projects that can be supported through the Due Income Tax payable or refundable. Launched in 2013, this type of support has already enabled nearly 900 projects to be carried out in Brazil.

The Pequeno Príncipe Complex, through the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital and the Pelé Pequeno Príncipe Research Institute, has already had 18 projects approved – some already concluded and others in progress –, which represent an investment of more than US$ 8 million in the last ten years. It was the first institution in Brazil accredited to receive resources from Pronas and the second to be accredited for Pronon.

For the 2023 round of support, the institution intends to register one project in the area of oncology and one research project aimed at the disabilities area.

“Pronon and Pronas are key support mechanisms for areas that are still very challenging for care and science, such as cancer and disabilities. Through projects financed by Pronon and Pronas, we were able to implement new care structures and important diagnostic services, acquire equipment, train teams, adapt physical structures, and develop research. These projects are contributing to change the reality of care at our institution, impacting thousands of children, adolescents, and their families, and contributing to the positive advance of child and youth health indicators in Brazil,” emphasizes the executive director of the Hospital, Ety Cristina Forte Carneiro.

Some achievements

Among the achievements of great impact made possible with Pronon resources at the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital is the implementation of seven beds for the Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Service. Inaugurated in 2016, these beds expanded the structure of the institution, which until then had three beds for BMT. Today, the service is one of the most important in Latin America and conducts about 10% of all pediatric bone marrow transplantations performed in Brazil.

Another highlight was the implementation of the Computerized Gait Laboratory, inaugurated in 2021 and made possible with Pronas resources. The tests carried out in this laboratory quantify movement, deformity, muscle strength, and everything that involves the mechanical part of gait, that is, the act of walking. In this way, the physician is allowed to make more efficient and personalized decisions in the conduct of the clinical and surgical treatment of children and adolescents who have some impairment in walking.
