The project is part of the master\u2019s research by student N\u00e1dia Nascimento da Rosa, from the Pequeno Pr\u00edncipe College. With drug testing in the 3D alveolus, the use of animals is minimized, in addition to obtaining a model that is closer to the similarity of the human organism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project emerged at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. \u201cThe first strains of SARS-CoV-2 affected the lungs very intensely. We then realized the need to be able to test new drugs <em>in vitro<\/em>,and it was from there that we started to study the possibility of developing the alveolus, which is a functional unit of the lung,\u201d highlights the scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explains that, although the lung has a varied cellular composition, with more than 40 cell types, the epithelial cells are the ones that concentrate the main functions of this organ. Based on this information, the team looked for a way to develop these cells. \u201cThis was possible through the use of umbilical cord stem cells, which differentiate into lung tissue cells. In the project, we are using 14 samples of umbilical cord stem cells,\u201d she reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developed differentiated cells are then transferred in an orderly fashion to a bioprinter. \u201cThis printer allows the cells to be arranged according to the organization of the lung tissue, particularly the alveolus,\u201d she points out.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano6\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/PP_News_Ed7_Materia3_2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1121\" width=\"335\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano6\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/PP_News_Ed7_Materia3_2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano6\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/PP_News_Ed7_Materia3_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano6\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/PP_News_Ed7_Materia3_2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pequenoprincipe.org.br\/newsano6\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/PP_News_Ed7_Materia3_2.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>After the tissue is bioprinted, the culture is transferred to the InCell Analyzer equipment, which allows the evaluation of cell viability. With the stratification of the tissue already established, a vascularization system is created in this tissue using epithelial cells.
