In the second year of the coronavirus pandemic, the event which will be streamed by YouTube proposes the celebration of science and life
In the second year of the coronavirus pandemic, the Pequeno Príncipe will hold its traditional gala event, once again, in a virtual way. The Pequeno Príncipe Gala 2021 – 10 years: celebrating science and life will be streamed on the institution’s YouTube channel at 7 p.m. on October 22nd. In addition to celebrating science and life, this edition also commemorates ten years of the event.
Traditionally, the Pequeno Príncipe Gala proposes the union of high gastronomy and solidarity as a way to strengthen the cause of children’s health. In this edition, the patron and curator of the event, chef Claude Troisgros, will share and execute a recipe that can be prepared at home by the participants. He will also be joined by another renowned chef. Philanthropic supporters Daniele Giacomazzi Behring and Amalia Spinardi Thompson Motta continue mobilizing their networks on behalf of the institution. Scientists and health professionals also participate in the event, sharing relevant content.
The scientific honoree of this edition will be the physician and researcher Bonald Cavalcante de Figueiredo, who is ahead of the Pelé Pequeno Príncipe Research Institute and dedicates his career to studies of genetic mutations responsible for the development of different types of cancer. The social honorees will be businessman Sergio Gordilho and Fernanda Valente, who have developed an important work of communication for social causes.
“Facing this challenging reality that imposes itself on our institution with another year of pandemic, we want to invite our supporters once again to celebrate science and the life of our boys and girls. More than ever, this is the time to exalt and invest in science – which will show the ways to overcome it – and in healthcare, which has been working hard to save so many lives impacted by SARS-CoV-2,” emphasizes the executive director of the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital, Ety Cristina Forte Carneiro.
The event will end with a musical performance to be announced soon.
Impact
In these ten years, the Pequeno Príncipe Gala has been responsible for raising about US$ 4.8 million, which has been addressed to the advancement of the healthcare practices, besides financing research projects which look for answers to the main complex childhood diseases, such as cancer, rare diseases and, more recently, COVID-19. These are resources that have been transformed into diagnoses and treatments for thousands of boys and girls.
The engagement of society in the Gala benefits, for example, children and adolescents like Guilherme Vinícius dos Santos Ribeiro, 13, who left Recife to undergo a bone marrow transplant (BMT) at the Pequeno Príncipe in search of a cure for a rare disease.
After the transplant, the boy had complications, such as infections caused by different bacteria and viruses. The success of the treatment depended on an imported and high-cost drug that is not provided by the Public Health System (SUS).
With funds raised by Gala, the Pequeno Príncipe was able to acquire the medication, which costs about US$ 1,400 each ampoule, totaling US$ 7,000 for the treatment. “When he started treating with this medication, the infections went away. My son stopped feeling pain, and the BMT was a success. Now, six months after the transplant, Guilherme is living a normal life. He can play, go to school and develop like any other child,” celebrates his mother, Anne Priscila Ferreira dos Santos.
